top soil

i am new to this forum and this is my first post so please ignore my lack of planted tank info.

heres the story... i am not new to fish tanks have a 14g saltwater reef tank and a 55 gal african cichlid tank. about a week ago my friends bearded dragon died and he gave me a 40gal breeder tank (safe for water i checked) i wanna set up a low tec tank with lots of plants and prob alot of tetras i love the look of it.

i dont have much money to spend as i am a college student and my money goes to alot of other things. would i be able to have success with just plan old topsoil from a homedepot covord with sand? if so what steps do i need to do inorder to get this topsoil ready.

sorrry i dragged that out just wanted to explain everything thanks for all the help and i look forward to being a part of this forum.

"Topsoil" can mean lots of different things. If it truly is topsoil, dug up from outdoors, it would work ok, but if it is a typical mix, called "topsoil", but mostly bits of wood and partly composted organic debris, plus pearlite or vermiculite, it wouldn't work well at all. But, there are some bagged "topsoils" that are very close to real topsoil - those would work.

Here is a post about one of the "topsoils" sold in a bag that seems to be good:

I recommend a bag of Miracle Gro organic potting soil, capped with whatever you like.
