question about Lava Rock

Hi! I'm setting up my first planted tank. I bought a bag of red lava rocks from Home Depot to put under my soil to help raise the back and to give height to my decorative rocks. First, is it ok to put the red lava rocks on the bottom then organic potting soil then my sand? Next, does anyone know if they paint or add a coating to those rocks? I got the regular Vigo Brand.

Thanks for any help!

It is safe to use in a tank.

Keep in mind that the soil and sand will seep down between the rocks over time.
If you are using a high end tank, you might want to use egg crate from home Depot to protect the bottom from scratches. It is also usefull for preventing the rocks to slide around and as support for heavier rocks.

I have used them as bio-media in the filter and also in the substrate just as you are.
Hot water rinse and I was done, never seen any ill from this.

The egg crate thing is a great idea! Thank you!
