Longevity of a white sand path in darker substrate?

For those of you who have a white path in their tanks surrounded by a darker substrate, how hard is it to maintain. I really like the look of it, but am wondering how it does in the long run. I'm talking about the ones like in the AGA contests. Are they separated by a mechanical barrier that is left in?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Now that I am looking at it more closely, maybe the paths are the same as the rest of the substrate?

I think in that particular photo, they use rocks to separate the sand portion from the AS behind the rocks. A few strategically placed plants will develop roots that also help to hold the two soils apart.

I've read a few different experiments with this. One guy did up a tank journal, where he molded plastic strips to shape in order to keep the two different substrates separate. This is a pretty good idea if you're not going to use stone, because a lot of plants will spread via runners that develop under the surface of the substrate.

I saw another tank where they just used a rather dense looking dark substrate, and used cardboard to keep the soils separate, and just removed it after the tank was planted. I have no idea what the long term hopes are on it staying separated.
