The only thing I would add is you must wait a while for the aqua soil to leech all the ammonia out. This requires generally 2 50% water changes for right around a month or until the test readings are super low. Discus are particularly sensitive to water quality so going for 2 months would not hurt. In addition AS buffers the water to a PH of around 6.5, 6.5 is in fact the optimal PH for discus. But the AS can loose its buffering capacity in as little as 8 months so be cautious of your PH. One thing to take note is if you are raising baby discus, babies will benefit in a PH of up to 7 or so. But should be transitioned slowly into a 6.5 PH later in life.

Hope this helps, Skye

Thanks ,ok I thought it would buffer for longer will have to look into best buffer for 6 to 6.5 ph . I figured a while before fish. Also is there a substrate close to ada that does not break down as fast into a pulp ?

IME, the current version of ADA Aqua Soil cycles in about a week with an established filter and a decent amount of plants. Even though ADA and many aquarists recommend frequent water changes during cycles, I do without and let the plants do the work.

Bump: the second generation AS broke down into mud after 2 -4 years. The versions after that seem to be more stable, as I have them going mainly intact after 4+ years.

I too did not do water change for the initial cycling of ADA soil. Took about a month for it to be ready for fishes.
