Black beauty

Hi guys I was wondering if black beauty are safe for shrimps. My brother and a friend are both use black beauty and some of their red cherry shrimps has died recently. I don't think its their water because my brother and I get our water from the same source. I read that black beauty are dangerous for cory cats but have found nothing about it on shrimps. If anyone knows the problems please let me know.

Its just coal slag and is pretty inert. Its the same thing as Black Diamond sand blasting grit. The only reason some people worry about it for corys is that it is sharp and might damage their mouths as they root around but barbel eroding is do more to poor water quality than sharp edges.
It makes an excellent substrate in shrimp tanks but it can scratch your glass a little so be gentle when adding it. Rinse it well too so that you get out the lighter particles.
