Inches of substrate?

I have a mixture of gravel and flourite, but I think I went a little excessive in the beginning of this tank and have almost 3" of substrate. I am doing some re-modeling tomorrow and would like to just go all out and fix it up, so a good time to remove some substrate if deemed necessary. Any thoughts? what is the minimum inches?

Three inches is pretty good. Spar. In fact, 3" is the general "rule of thumb" when it comes to substrate depth. 3" provides a good base for planting Crypts and Swords, and provides enough room for stems to throw off a good root system.

I'd stick with the 3" of substrate if it were my aquarium!

sounds like a plan and thanks for the advice

I am taking out my background tomorrow (never did like it), so that may lower the gravel some anyway. I have some extra Flourite that I can put in there if it does lower too much though.

thanks again!

I always go for 3" of substrate or as close as possible. I have found if you go much lower that it is harder to plant some plants, just not enough depth.

2 inches is working good for my 10gal. I'd probably want at least this amount in any planted tank, if not more (if I could ever afford to).

Plants are gone, but my 33gal and I are back after a long hiatus.
