Replacing substrate with HC carpet

Can any point me to a forum post or online resource that specifically deals with replacing the substrate of a heavily planted tank, that has a *Dwarf Baby Tears* (or similar) carpet?

All the videos I've found only deal with large, hearty plants, not small delicate plants.

My guess is I'll need to do this incrementally, over the course of several weeks or months, where I tackle only a small section at a time.

Does that seem reasonable?

(By the way, I'm getting ahead of myself, as I'm still cycling my new ADA tank, and I won't need to actually deal with this problem for another 2 or 3 years.)
