How long does buffering substrate last with to water?

And, once its exhausted, do you have to a total tank redo to add new substrate?

There was only one catch and that was Catch-22.

How long it maintains buffering is highly variable. The product itself plays a huge role as not all are created with the same capacity. Then, you have to consider how much work it has to do - water changes, dissolving shells, etc.

Once exhausted, it can be difficult to replace. You can't recharge it or anything, but you could age new substrate in another container until any ammonia or whatever stops leaching. Once ready, you can gradually scoop out and replace (I'd do like 1/3 - 1/4 at a time).
