Summary: 2 inches of substrate under 3 inches of water. Need advice on most efficient substrate for mainly emergent plants.

Working on a Paludarium. New to the hobby and my eyes are straining from days of reading all the posts I can. They've answered questions I didn't even know I had!

However I'm stumped on what I should use for substrate in the aquatic section of my setup. It's an exo terra 36x24x18 so I've got a depth of 5 inches in aquatic room, a mere 3 inches by the time I have substrate in there so I it's incredibly important I get this right. Any advice?

Was thinking just black diamond sand and root tabs. Wondering if may be .5-1" organic potting soil with the blasting sand as a cap would be a better bet?

Thanks all! Open to any and all suggestions. I'm in no hurry to get this set up. Want it done right with no coulda/woulda/shoulda!

I'm certainly open to that, just thought that having real soil would be Better? Not the case? I'd like something soft or fine enough that my loaches and corys will be happy.

You may want to calculate how much water volume that'll be, I don't think you have enough room for the bio-load of loaches. Pygmy cories, sure, but I'm uncertain about loaches.

My current project, a 65 gallon aquarium stocked with vernal pool fauna.

It'll be about 9 gallons of water once you take away the displacement from the su substrate. Less then I was expecting actually. Maybe I could silicone a taller piece of glass in there to increase my water depth...
