Dirted tank - plant before or after capping?

I've set up about 6 dirted tanks so far, pretty much following the Walsted method. (Mostly 10 gallon tanks and one that's 5 gallons.) I'd like to think I'm learning each time I do this - for example, I found that it's way harder to work in a 5 gallon than a ten gallon.

I'm getting ready to set up a 20 gallon long, but I have a question for those who are more experienced. Up to now, I put down the dirt, planted the root plants, then added the cap. It's hard not to swamp smaller or "soft" plants with the sand. I'm thinking it would be a better idea to put the soil down, cap it, and then plant through the cap.

Am I like the last one on the block to figure this out?

thanks for any suggestions....

I have read it is best to cap it and plant thru the cap afterward.

Sometimes the path of enlightenment is a longer journey!

Soil,cap, then plant.
Do this in the beginning, plant heavy. Enjoy!

Growing is not that difficult.

Thanks to both of you!

LOL, I guess the longer journey includes truly understanding the "why" of why to work in that order too!

I just hit up an aquarium club annual auction Saturday and scored many plants to add to the plants I've harvested from my other tanks. If most of them live, I'll have a really heavily planted tank!
