what is the substrate?

I am not sure what substrate is

I guess that substrate is the underground fertilizer

true or not?

It is the "gravel". People use all kinds of stuff, apart from plain gravel.

It's called substrait because of what shalu said -- there are all kinds from sand, to processed, nutrient-rich clay substances, so calling it "gravel" just doesn't work any more.
