just winging it here

Ok, so I'm working on 2 tanks at the moment. One tank is my wife's 72 gal bow front freshwater. The other is my 20 gal tall freshwater. For her tank she has snowy river gravel (forgot name of brand) and I have a black, course sand with a layer of fine sand on top. The original plan had nothing to do with live plants because I had bad experiences with it in the past. I have since done tons of research and discovered aquascaping. My wife is not interested in aquascaping, but she does want a nice carpet of dwarf baby tears through parts of her tank. Is the gravel we have good for supporting plants? My wife wants dwarf baby tears, and I want dwarf hair grass. I also have amazon sward, water sprite and four leaf clover. My tank is already established with water and 5 fish/1amano shrimp and I JUST got the water conditions under control, so I really don't want to drain my tank to start over. My wife's tank doesn't have water yet, but she is set on her gravel. What can I do?
