Sand vs Eco-complete cap over soil

Im sure this topic has come up time and time again but I wanted to see what everyone thinks on this topic. I'm planning a 29g planted tank with a finnex+ 24/7 light and diy co2. This is only my second planted tank so I want to be a little more experimental and get some better growth then my current set up.
So right now I'm a little caught up on substrate. I know I want to go with dirt but I'm unsure of the cap I want to put over it. Right now I'm between Eco-complete and BDBS. I'm leaning toward BDBS but I've never done a sand tank before. I'm thinking I can have medium plants so what cap would be best for their growth? I also never cleaned a sand tank so is it a lot more difficult than gravel? And pointers would help as I'm getting ready to start buying my materials for the build. Thanks in advance!
