Substrate ideas

I want to try something new for a substrate. I've always used substrates in the past geared towards plants such as Eco, Flourite, Floramax etc. Any idea of a good plain substrate that plants might grow decently in? I was considering pool filter stand as it is cheap and I've heard a lot of good things about it. My only issue is it seems it might be really dirty when initially purchasing it/prepping it. I would like to at least use something that is somewhat clean

Black Diamond Blasting Sand or Pool Filter Sand is the way to go. I never wash the substrate... it just makes more of a mess that way, just pour the water in very slowly over a sponge to avoid disturbing the substrate
