Arrow Help - which one? Cheap or not

I really like the look of silica sand in small to medium sized tanks, I'm going to be setting up a 46G planted tank with a fluorite/sand 1st substrate layer, I then initially wanted 3-4cm layer of silica sand on top. However reading through the forums and other websites people say it is too fine and compacts. My second option would be something like 1-2 mm Black Quartz Gravel but at £30 ($55) for a 25kg bag I don't know if I can justify it? The 25kg bag of sand cost me £4.

Will Black Quartz be a better substrate for the aquarium and the plants? I think it would be a nice contrasting colour but slightly unnatural looking, sand looks really natural IMO!

Thanks in advance guys.

Posted a picture of my tank earlier today, so it might be of interest. Took it from the front of the tank and you can see what fluorite looks like w/sand on top of it (there's also a layer of peat, which you can barely see on the bottom of it.

Scroll to the very bottom and you'll see the picture.
