How can I improve/fertilize my gravel substrate?

I got into the hobby recently, didnt know substrate was important and just bought gravel....plants grew really well for the first few months and now the growth has slowed down a lot! What can I do to fertilize the substrate? I cant afford to change the substrate at the moment?

I've heard of root tablets, which ones are the best?

The tank does not have co2 either. Planning to keep it low tech, cant really afford to upgrade much on this tank. Hopefully I'll be able to in a few months. Trying to find a solution in the meantime.

are you adding any fertilizer to the water? Most plants grow fine without any root fertilizer.

There is a bit of research that indicates many plants take nutrients from their roots that they cannot take with their leaves, and vice versa. For best success, nutrient rich substrate mixed with EI works very well. TO add minerals to a sand substrate, there a a bajaillion options, from my products to any of the many, many other substrate nutrients.

I'd look at what others are using and try that. I personally use my own products--RootMedic(shocker!) with playsand. I use all of them... mostly cause I am a freak.

You could try out any of them, as most of them out there are good enough.
