What substrate can I use???

There is no longer any store in town that carried Eco Complete. I need at least 2 more bags for my established 55. Is there a cheap option such as pool filter sand that would look good with the Eco Complete? If I can't find a black substrate I'll have to completely re-do the tank and I do NOT want to do that. No time and no money for it. Can't order online because it's too expensive to ship to AK.

On a similar note you should just order what you want online. A few extra buck for shipping but at least its what you want. if you shop around you can suually get it for what you would pay in stores anyways.

But it's not "a few extra bucks" to ship to Alaska. Dr. Fosters and Smith shipping deal does not apply to Alaska, neither does the PetCo deal.

It is, on average, 20$ to ship PER BAG up here, due to weight. So I would have to pay 40 bucks for one bag. Not realistic for my budget.

I hear pool filter sand will eventually sink below the eco complete....is there any black sand (such as reptile sand?) I can substitute with???

Tihitian Moon Sand, Flourite Black Sand, Seachems Onyx Sand are all dark grey to black sands you can order online but then your still paying shipping.

If you have your heart set on an black substrate for cheap I suggest you look into Turface charcoal or a product called Thrifty Sorb wich is a calcined clay product for cleaning up oil spills on garage floors. Here in NY I found 40lb bags of Thrifty Sorb at my local auto parts store for $5.00 a bag and it looks almost like the Turface Charcoal I wouldnt be suprised if its the same exact stuff with just sold for different uses.
