Anaerobic soil--fact vs fiction

I would like to utilize some steep slopes and deep substrate in a new tank Im planning--however, the thought of toxic gas building up in bubbles under my substrate just waiting to kill all of my fish is a little intimidating.

Is there a rule of thumb for how deep you can go with different substrate materials without worrying about the gas build up?

Is there a method that works to keep it from building up other than trumpet snails?

Thanks in advance for any input.

If you intend to plant your tank, then you can have a relatively deep substrate (say 3-4 inches) without having to worry too much about anaerobic spots, as the roots will help aerate the substrate.

Agreed, the plants will keep most of it well aerated. Plus a little anoxic here and there is a good thing to have, it helps with conversion of certain elements. I probably wouldn't do a 4" deep bed of fine sand, but most other substrates have worked well for me. I currently have 6" deep areas of Flourite in my new setup...

Hope that helps
