Top of substrate "dirty" - suck out the dirt or mix it in?

My tank has been running just shy of three years and it is time for a rescape. I am taking all the plants and hardscape out of the tank and basically starting over. There is a bit of decomposing organic material on top of the eco complete in places and my question is, with everything out of the tank should I take this opportunity to stir that stuff into the substrate (good nutrients?) or should I just suck them off the top?

I would vacuum out the accumulated gunk. There should still be lots of it falling through the cracks and enrich the EC. I don't think "stirring it in" will work that well... most of it will just get suspended in the water column and then settle down on the surface again.

I blow mine around with a powerhead to resuspend it into the water column and let the filter remove it.

I gravel vac my ADA AS which from what I hear is about the lightest aquatic substrate out there that is popular. I may loose a few grains but all in all a vac every couple of month during WC's makes the tank and my eyes very happy.

@bSmith, are you digging in or just skimming the surface?

I would say I stick the suction tube in the substrate an inch or so.
