Help with Eco-Complete?

So I've never used anything but either flourite or pool filter sand for plants, but I am entering a friendly competition and want to try something new.

I'm thinking a mixture of peat and laterite topped with about two inches of eco complete, can anyone help me out and tell me what to expect from this. I know there will be a bigger ammonia spike than i usually deal with, but for some reason I cant wrap my head around how to do this, should I set substrate and add water then plant it, or should I plant it and then add water and let the plants deal with the cycle?

Grrr I think I'm over thinking this, help?

Incidentally, why was it that none of all the pious ever discovered psycho-analysis? Why did it have to wait for a completely godless Jew?

Let your plants sit through the cycle. It won't hurt them. They will actually probably love it. Remember afterwards to slowly add fauna to compensate for the plants throwing your ammonia and nitrite test kits off.
