mixed substrate - how to unmix them?

For some of you who had to start over from scratch...did you unmix your substrate (if it's possible). I mixed flourite with gravel and would like to start over...removing the gravel of course and trying something else. The gravel is about the same size as the flourite particles.

You can't. If you had flourite and sand, you could sift it through a fine mesh screen...but separating two same-sized particles...good luck figuring that one out.

A lot of patience and a good set of tweezers.

I've done this before. As gnaster said lots of patience, but I didn't use tweezers. Fingers are fast. It was only a 5 lb bag of mixed black and brown gravel for a nano tank so not much time required.

Just a wild suggestion (that probably won't work), see if a magnet will attract the iron in flourite.

That just might work. I cleaned the glass with a magnetic pad after setting up my new tank and found several flourite nuggets attached to it. I don't know if it's uniformly magnetic but it might get most of it.

When I went from a 29 gal to 60 gal I put fresh flourite along the front and sides and then backfilled filled with mixed substrate. It worked out well. No cloudyness to speak of and a deep bed of 'nutrient rich' <fish poo> gravel/flourite substrate.

Has anyone had any luck finding a vendor for 'Profile'?

If you want/need Profile then call lawn maintenance companies. Call larger garden centers, call the Mariners. Also think to ask for Turface as it's the same thing.
