Weight of a 9L bag of AS

If I remember correctly they are ~28lbs. Can someone confirm this for me. Thinking about removing the Xingu Sand and putting in Aqua Soil Malaya into my Riparium. It will be a tedious task but the sand seems to be starting to compact on me.

I jsut need to figure out how many bags to buy.

Also how much of a mini cylce do you think this will cause on a well set of well cycled filters.

I don't have a full bag around atm, but 18 liters (2x9 liter bags) in a 36" X 18" tank ( 648 sq in)
yielded ~2.5 inches substrate depth... You have double the area to cover, so 36 liters should get you to 2.5" in your 150. (IF my math is correct)

I would pre-cycle the substrate if it were me (at least for a couple weeks to be safe)...

Thanks Larry, that means I should be able to get away with 5 bags so I have a bit of extra, should save me a ton as I was thinking I would bee 7 or 8 bags.

What do you think of the look of the Malaya: http://www.adana-usa.com/index.php?m...products_id=93

I think it would add the finish touches to my Biotopish SE Asian Riparium. I know most of the pictures I have seen from over that way in the rainforests seem to have a very high content of clay.

Wish I could buy it locally jsut abit to make sure I like to color of it first, may have to order a small 3L bag of it to color check with.

I really like the look of the Malaya... I've been trying to come up with an excuse to use it myself
(I do have an empty 60P, Hmmm)

Trust your instincts... they've served you well so far

When I ordered 3 x 9L of AS UPS said it weighed 63 lbs. So 21 lbs give or take.

Yeah, thinking about getting a small bag shipped next week to look at. Only be about $20 and if I don't like it atleast I'm not out $200+ in substrate.

I also have Orlando over at GLA sourcing some pictures of the AZOO Plant Grower Bed natural substrate in its wet form so I can compare pictures.

I can't seem to find much info regarding the AZOO at all... At least with ADA your dealing with
a *known* regarding appearance, performance, ect....

Worst case scenario, you'll have substrate for your next Nano project

Yep, I'll probably order a bag after this weekends local fish auction, maybe I'll make enough to buy it all.

Off topic, but have you considered throwing in some MTS?

I did about 1000 of them and they didn't help and most of them died below the substrate which made matters worse.

Just a slight update though. Started a substrate swap today of Turface Pro League Natural. There is a distibuter about 10 minutes from my place and I picked up a 100#'s for $19.80. Has the really rich clay coloring I was looking for at a price that I can't beat. I've got tons of Root Medic Fertilizer Capsules and can dose the water column easily so it won't make a big deal on having AS.

Are you doing a complete swap, or are you mixing in the turface? Whenever I used SMS, I just couldn't plant in it, too light. But, I would mix it 50/50 with something heavier and it worked fine, and was a nice way to reduce cost.

Just straight, I know its light but I'm not planting too much in it.
