Sand in the water column

Hello,
I just set up my first sand tank. I rinsed the sand many times before adding it to the tank, and all the particles that are left settle out pretty quickly in just a bucket. I really like the look but I'm having difficulty getting it to stay down. When the filter pump is turned on, sand particles are picked up by the water flow. It's just a few, but they never get a chance to settle, so after a few hours, the water column is filled with sand particles. Not so much that I can't see through the water, but enough that I'm worried about the plants getting sand-blasted. No critters yet. Does anyone know of some way to fix this without getting a new pump or replacing the sand? I added a spraybar to the outflow to try to diffuse the pressure. This did give much more even flow, but it seems to have made the problem worse since now there's more of a whirlpool going on. Advice is greatly appreciated.
