introducing fluorite to an established tank

I am new to planted aquariums and already have a established community 50 gal tank that I wanted to begin planting and was wondering if I bought fluorite if I could just put it in the tank after I rinsed or if i would have to drain the water put the fluorite in and put the water back in?

Either way would work. Personally I'd drain and empty it first though, just to be easier. You can keep your filter running and save some of the mulm to go under the new substrate to help make sure the cycle isn't totally destroyed (probably still have to do some water changes if the tank was fully stocked, though).

If the tank IS fully stocked and you're too worried about messing with the cycle, then you might try replacing 1/3 of the substrate at a time. A little more work, but it's do-able.

Just make sure you rinse the Flourite REALLY well, and I also recommend letting it dry after rinsing.

Thank you so much for answering my question but unfortunately I have to sell my 50 gal setup but I have a 10 gal that I will definitely be setting up to start off my first planted tank.
