Question about hardscape and substrate

Hi! I am thinking of creating a mountain scape. In all of my research (looking at photos all day long) I notice that everyone lays substrate down and adds their hardscape on top of the substrate.

Can I add a thin layer of substrate (call it a 1/2 inch), then lay out my hardscape and add appropriate amount of substrate around the hardscape?

Yes, that's completely fine! A few do this as well.

you might want to consider a substrate enhancer if you are going to do it in two stages.

i like ferka aqua base but there are several product that do the same thing.

what substrate were you considering on using?
