How clean is clean?

On another substrate question, I finally found some really nice 3ml black (plus some brownish/greyish bits) gravel, good quality, roundish and smooth, and it's natural not painted. Yay! It's to cap my MTS. However, it came in the bags with a thick layer of mud. I have gone through hundreds of litres of water already trying to clean it (and I've only done 2 of 5 bags!). It's at the stage now where there's just a slight fog left in the water when I put some gravel in a bucket and fill it up with water. Is this going to be good enough? I want to do a good job now so I don't have trouble with stirring it up later when I move plants around, but seriously, I can't afford to waste any more water on this! (tank water only). What do you think?

Regards, Kara

Well if you plan on using MTS be ready to do waterchanges when you move plants around. Being that MTS is super fertile MUD it readily dissolves in water when not being capped by a substrate. So it is quite important that you like your scape when you plant it. You can rearrange things, just make sure that you do so slowly when you uproot plants and do a good water change afterwards. I did this exact thing today, didn't realize how mud clumps together on roots.

As far as rinsing goes... Do it till its a thin fog but you can see the bottom. Your filter should take out the rest when it goes in the tank.

Hope this helps,
Your pal,

Piano

Ok, I can definitely see the bottom, thanks, I'll rely on the filter to do the rest then. Who would of thought one could get in such a tizzy about dirt and gravel!
