question about substrate

I have recently dug out my old tank looks about 30 gallons 12x24 depth looks 18i.

I use to have gravel in as my substrate with a fluval 3 plus, vaccumed bi weekly - monthly.
I do intend to grow plants, I did try with the gravel, unfort failed miserably.

now my question is... Should I stick with the gravel, and should I go the sand? and how is sand maintenance?

I was looking at this " Seachem Onyx Sand" as being a new member unfort i cannot post the link. . in time I will be able to
for my new substrate...

I wouldn't start out with sand if you haven't had many planted setups. Sand is a good substrate but takes a bit of specialized care. I'd look for a gravel in the 1mm-3mm size, Eco-Complete, Flourite, or Turface would be good choices depending on what you can get locally. Even PetCo now sells a decent Eco-Complete like substrate.
