What substrate would have the longest lifespan? Including regular dosing of the water column.

Any of big name products will probably outlast your desire to rescape the tank. I had tanks with flourite, eco-complete, SMS and topsoil going 5+ years until we sold the house and moved. Most of them will mush after awhile but as long as you don't go crazy on moving it around your ok.

The key is to dose water column ferts and keep it from compacting.

That Schultz Aquatic Plant Soil stuff is the same as Turface, right? Mine is over 9.5 years old now and looks and acts the same as when it was fresh. There isn't any mushing going on that I can see. Too bad it is such an ugly color.

I think Sean said his is still going strong for more than 9 years, if I remember correctly?

If you're dosing the water column with ferts, then the only things you should have to worry about with a substrate are compaction issues (should only be a problem with very fine substrates that are too deep) or breakdown (I've heard that some like Floramax will eventually disentigrate into mush, though I've never used any of those so can't say from personal experience).
