Ratio of sand to gravel

What kind of ratio would you guys recommend? 3 part sand, 1 part gravel? How much gravel would be needed to prevent the sand from compacting?

How big should the gravel be?

Any ideas guys?

I would just go with all sand. just be careful on how fine of a grained sand you use. if it is really small grained it can be compacted much easier. the sand will always end up on the bottom because of size, so mixing the 2 would be pointless after time and they separate. Hope this helps.

75 Gallon Planted Tank.

Could you tell me what kind of plants you guys have in the tank? I heard that heavy roots will keep the sand from compacting.

Do you periodically poke holes in the sand to give some aeration? How do I prevent build up of deadly gas? The last thing I would want is killing all my fishes.

What is the deepest depth I could do without risking compacting?

Stay between 2-3" and you should be fine.

Rooted plants like Crypts, swords, etc should help.
