sand as use in planted tank?

I am getting ready to start my first planted tank. I am getting a 58g tank and have a lot of this sand left over from another tank

It won't let me post a link but its the Carib Sea Black Tahitian Moon Sand

will this work for a planted tank? I was thinking of getting ecocomplete or something similar and mixing the two in the tank. just wanted to get some advice from you all before I do anything with the substrate. I will run T5 lights but don't plan on any CO2 at this time.

Tahitian Moon Sand will work in a planted tank. It does not hold nutrients, so I would suggest some fertilizer tablets for heavy root feeders, and water column dosing.

Do not get such bright light unless you are going to add carbon. Excel is pretty good.

thanks for the info. I had the T5s left over from a reef tank so I figured I should use them. I may have to look into it more then because I would rather not wast them. Is there a good read on the tablets and water column dosing that I can learn from?

you can also get some eco-complete and mix it with the sand.. I put eco-complete on the bottom, and slicia pool filter sand on top. works great.

Thanks, Joey. tanks-CUBE of different sizes.

The T-5 bulbs from a reef tank might not have the proper spectrum for plants. Find out.

There are tons of stickies at the top of each forum, as well as a forum with all the best threads called Planted Tanks FAQ.

For lighting questions look at the top of the lighting forum.
Fer fertilizer questions, look at the top of the fertilizer forum.
