Do you think it would be a good idea to use lava rock for the land section of a paladarium. I am thinking about getting one or two big lava rocks and chipping away at them until I get the shape I want.

The reason I would choose lava rock is that it is very easy to shape the way you want. Also, it is very cheap. I could get enough rock to completely fill a 55g up to the top for about $15. So I could do a land section for $5 tops.

Since the lava rock is porous it should allow the roots to go into the rock and it should also allow water to get to the soil very well, right?

Is this a good idea? or am I missing something?

If you plan on keeping animals, I would be concerned with the sharp surface of the lava rocks... otherwise, good idea.
