New tank, dont even know what to call it

Take a look at my new 40g breeder, I've always wanted to build a tank like this. I'm not sure what to even call it. The section on the left is about 2-inches deep, and 18"x10" in area. It will only be filled to the point that you see currently.

I just set it up today, so the play sand has not had time to settle. It'll be pretty low tech for the time being, but I may slowly upgrade bits and pieces.

What I'm looking for is advice and recommendations for plants for the above-water part.

For the underwater part i'm planning some blyxa japonica and needle leaf java fern for now. Trying to keep it simple, but open to suggestions.

I'm also looking for a large stump-like chunk of driftwood for the water side that will protrude out of the water a good bit, but not up to the top of the tank. So if anyone has anything like that I'd be interested in seeing pictures.

Oooo some real estate you got there I've always enjoyed the emersed growth of rotalas, utricularia gramanifolia (which will form kind of a lawn), and liiiiike lilaeopsis brasiliensis.

Excited to see this develop!

Will UG grow with low humidity? I dont really want to put a top on it, but I guess I could. Will any old rotala grow emersed? Is there any recommended reading for emersed plant growing?

Well I live in Colorado, which can be pretty arid, and my UG has been growing/spreading at a pretty decent rate in an open-top 10g palu. It's slow to spread to some of the more open areas but it's definitely getting there. I have either rotala indica or r. rotundifolia which has been good to me as well. Sometimes it grows more vertically, but eventually starts to become more of a horizontal creeper. I've never had mine flower, but I know certain types will. Couldn't recommend any reading, other than just researching whatever particular plant you're curious about. I know I've seen one site that would say whether or not certain aquatic plants had emergent growth or not, but unfortunately I can't remember what it was right now.

Thanks for your help, I will definitely look around for some UG. Hopefully it will do ok in sand. I think I have a lot to learn about emersed growth.

Oh yeah, it should love the sand. I'd say experiment! Find what grows well for you.

Can anyone recommend a light for this? It will be at the top of the tank, but since its only half full with water im not sure what to do.
