Riparium hanging planter substrate

I am about to set up my first riparium. I have made a DIY hanging planter out of a perforated PVC sheet with 1/8" round holes. What would you recommend as a substrate for it? I thought of using Eco-Complete, but I think its smaller granules will either fall through or clog the holes in the planter.

From pictures Ive seen it looks like most people use clay balls in the bottom and top it with finer gravel.

A combination of hydroton (clay balls often used in the hydroponics industry) with a capping of aquarium gravel (Eco-Complete, Flourite, what have you) generally works best. You can also add a small layer of mineralized top soil if you want as well.
