Hognose snake question

I have had my hognose for about 5 years ever since he ( I believe that it is a he because the tail is longer, and not very stubby, but im not great at sexing snakes) and he is about 1ft 2-4 inches long, and isn't very thick, and can only eat medium sized pinkies, and im wondering why he doesn't look like his father which was very big. I know that they reach sexual maturity in about 2 years, so im not sure why he is so small, thinking he is already 5 years old, any ideas?

If snakes aren't kept warm enough, they won't grow as quickly. What temps do you keep him at?

I'd actually bump that up a few degrees. 29-32 is ideal as long as they have a cooler end so they can thermoregulate.

You said he eats pinkies, but how many and how often?

really depends on the size i get then, sometimes the pinkies i get are really small as the store i buy them from isn't good at getting me the right size all the time. When the pinkies are really small or small i give them about every 4 days, but sometimes earlier if my snake indicates its hungry. If they are the size i want to give him, which means the pinkies already have a fully developed tail, and longer legs, than once every 6-8 days or when the snake indicates it is hungry.

Ok then, 3rd question: what species of Hognose is it? The American species stay fairly small, males especially. Most male Westerns I've seen top out around 20" max, most stay closer to 18".

I guess that would be it as it is indeed a western hognosed snake, and i guess it also depends on the individual as his father was a monster and his mother wasn't to small either.

True, there's always the factor of genetics when it comes to animals. He may have just been the runt of the litter.

yes genetics applies to every living thing, and snakes are certainly inclined to their own genetic variations. Just like with morphs i guess different sizes can come from the same parents. As long as he is healthy im fine with his size, as his small size is actually cute.
