Paludarium construction question

I've been watching the YT channel of someone who makes a lot of paludariums. His preferred method is to install a separate pane of glass inside the tank, sort of as a false back wall. The water pumps etc. are kept behind that glass - it's got a gap at the bottom to let water in and a hole drilled at the top for the pump - and the hardscape is built up to cover it. It's really clever. I'm sure there's a term for this, 'internal sump' maybe? I'm not sure.

Anyway, I'm curious if something like this could be done with a stiff enough piece of foam or filter material. Would it create a sort of mattenfilter? Make good 'green wall' material? Or would it accumulate too much debris and get nasty? Maybe I'd be better off just buying the damn glass...
