New 10 gallon tank...

Just got a "new" 10 gallon 13x13x20h tank, that I'd like to turn into a paludarium.

Thinking 5" water and the rest landscape. Going to use the HOB to make a waterfall and use foam for the background. - Covered in terrestrial moss with a few pockets of soil into which I will then plant everything else. (Got the "land" part figured out mostly...)

So, I am wondering a couple of things.
If i don't add critters, would i still need to run the filter 24/7?
And, for the water portion, will just soil at the bottom suffice, or does it need to be topped in sand or gravel?

If its just dirt with no cap it will be very easy for it to get stirred up and then clog your filter. If you are planting the water portion you should definitely do a cap. If not planting the water then you should skip the soil all together and just go with sand.

A small water pump will work better for a waterfall because a HOB filter needs a higher water level to work. Good luck!

Thanks, yeah the hob does seem rather impractical. I think I'll prepare the waterfall portion but will leave it dry until I find a small enough motor to 3d print a pump. Or just cave and buy one 😉

Just picked up a huge piece of bark. I was all excited about putting the setup together, until I realized I should probably either boil or bleach it first... so that's on the menu for tomorrow 🙂
