Paludarium Beginner Questions

So I'm planning out a paludarium in an Aqueon 20-Long for what will probably be a yellow-spotted salamander, I want it to be 60-80% land and the rest water, as of now I'm probably going to use acrylic to separate the 2 sections out. The two questions I have are: 1.) With roughly 6 inches of water what thickness of acrylic do i need 1/4th or is 1/8th alright? 2.) Whats the best looking while still being semi-easy to make the acrylic look better/conceal it, with stones (maybe pea gravel or river stones)?

Ecology student with too much time on his hands...

Silicon does not bond well to acrylic. Personally I always wonder why people go the route of partitioning the water / land section. These usually fail and you end up flooding the dry section and they never look too natural IMO. Personally I like to use a false bottom. This allows for more water volume and it is much easier to make a natural looking transition from the land and water sections. Just my 2 cents.

If I use the false bottom how do I make it look separate? Can I just build a permeable rock wall between them or do I need to leave it open?

You would have to close it off so the salamander couldn't get under there. There are a couple ways to do this you could use egg crate or what I like to do is use a material like matten filter or something similar to get a little bit of biological filtration out of the deal (just have to design it so it can be removed and cleaned if necessary). Depending on how deep the water portion is you can just create a slope with something like leca then lay window screen down and put substrate on top in the land section and gravel on top in the water. You can separate the two sections with rocks so that substrate doesn't migrate into the water.

Thanks, this definitely sounds like a better idea with less hassle.
