paludarium

I am about to start a paludarium and I have seen people use foam under the rocks and substrate , does this have to be replaced over time due to break down in water ? Its cheaper than using the light diffuser stuff but if its not long term I wont use it . All the ones I have seen use foam have been show tanks so I dont know if those tanks are kept running long term .

If you're talking about making a background out of Styrofoam, it's certainly doable. Generally it involves covering whatever you make in grout or epoxy afterwards. If you go to dendroboard.com there's a stickied discussion about the process. One of the guys, hxsian, has been doing it for at least a decade and he's had no issues to report.
