How to aerate container ponds

Well...how do you add aeration to a container pond? As much as I like paradise fish and other anabantoids, I would like to have pond options beyond only those fish who breathe air!

Here's an article that might help. The author spoke about this at the NEC convention this Spring, it was a good talk.

So, for - say - a 40 by 27 by 12 inch round container pond, with 12 being the height, plants alone would suffice for most fish?

I'd think a lot of fish would be fine, dunno if I'd go so far as to say most fish...

For the daytime at least, you can get small solar water pumps around 45 gph, that can be used to break the surface and get some flow in the container. Not so great for windy areas though, I ended up just using mine for circulation and not having it going above the surface.

On the bay of E, I got mine for about $15, including shipping, from China and oddly enough that lil thing is still working fine, despite a ton of abuse. My regular name brand tank filters on the other hand, can't go a year without some problem

I have a trio of interconnected watering troughs, in an above-ground tank arrangement, roughly of 550 gallons total. I've been aerating it with just one MillionAire two outlet air-pump and a pair of large air-stones, which seems to work fine for our fish load of 3 medium Koi, 7 White Clouds and 4 Rosey Barbs.

The Rosey Barbs figured out how to swim upstream to the highest tank through the 3" pipe overflow with less than 3/4" depth water flow. We now have a small school of baby Rosey Barbs in the sedimentsettling\floating plant trough. I never figured that they would spawn so easily with the water hovering around 58 to 62 degrees.

Starting small, keeping it simple..(?)
250 gallon stock tank, "pond"
20 gallon H CBS Shrimp tank
