Punchbowl Oasis

Back in May 2016, I started this outdoor tub (40gal) project.

Initially it started w/ a dwarf ornamental taro plant & a miniature papyrus plant that were repotted in in plastic mesh baskets filled w/ sphagnum moss & topped w/ black cinder.
Added a water lily that was potted in 8oz food storage container filled w/ AquaSoil. Later additions also planted in AquaSoil containers were Echinodorus barthii & E bleheri w/ smaller AquaSoil tubs of Helanthium tenellum, Cryptocoryne parva & Ranalisima rostrata.
For fauna, added locally caught Neocardina shrimp & finally, small group of Elassoma okefenokee. Every couple of weeks, drop in a portion of live daphnia to feed the Pygmy sunfish.
Started a living wall over the tub and some of my SS tanks which required me to install framed 60% shade cloth to protect my bromeliads, mini orchids & now Nepenthes.

The shrinking lily pads & the addition of a mangrove propagule prompted me to try potting/repotting these two plantings in 1gal "SmartPots" filled w/ expanded clay pellets used in aquaponics set-ups w/ black cinder topping. If this works out for these plantings, may do same for taro & papyrus when repotting them.

Didn't think of it that way. I live on the side of an old volcano crater which has been used by the federal government as a national burial site "Punchbowl National Cemetery ". That's how the name for the thread came about. But, I do like your insightful derivation.

I'm surprised the cedar hasn't compromised the sunfish, the sap from it (which gives it its smell) can effect respiratory functions on animals, and is an anti bacteria (bad for beneficial bacteria).
Lovely setup btw. I wish i could get taro to grow but the 2 times I bought dwarf taro it turned to mush..

The toppings used in some of the plant containers is black cinder not cedar. Cinder is volcanic rock. The sphagnum moss that was used last year for the taro & papyrus plantings, is still going strong to my surprise but I'll probably replace it with the expanded clay pellets. Thanks for looking.

I used to be stationed on K-Bay. The punchowl is beautiful. One of my favorite places on the island.

Whoops mis-read cinder and cedar sorry ^^''
I use expanded clay media for my aquaponics and ripariums, works great and is lightweight.

I'll be starting a separate thread on expanded clay media.
