Staghorn problem

I am in the middle of a battle with staghorn with Protalon707. I cannot see much of a difference and I am on day6 out of 7. Anyway. Staghirn is growing also on my interior filter sponge. Would it be ok to treat that sponge with liquid co2 as it kills alfae easily? I just don't know what affect it might have on nitrification bacteria in the sponge.
If you think it would be fine, how would you apply it? Just immerse the sponge into a mixture if co2 and old aquarium water after change?
