2.5 nano with shrimp and HC

Hey guys,

I am starting a 2.5 gallon nano. Let me start by showing you the scape and telling you that I have 27 watts compact fluorescent (10 watts/gallon).

feel free to make suggestions on the scape!!

now for the laundry list of questions. I really need responses so feel free to answer one question, all of them, or just make a general suggestion!!!!

1. How many shrimp can I fit in a 2.5 gallon? Where can I order them from? I was hoping for 10 cherry, 10 CRS, and 10 bumblebee. Is this possible? Should I add fish? If so, what kind?

2. I was planning on just doing an HC carpet. Since theres no fish, should i do it emersed or submersed? Will I need to dose and CO2 with the amount of lighting I have?

3. Is it possible to do this filterless and without a powerhead?

4. Is DIY CO2 going to be efficient enough for the HC to grow if I do go with CO2?

ONCE AGAIN, PLEASE ANSWER ANYTHING OR MAKE ANY COMMENTS!!! THANK YOU

1. I would stick to 1 kind of shrimp in a tank that size.
2. Emersed often grows quicker than submersed, but some HC can be lost in the transition. HC really does well when excel or some form of CO2 injection is used.
3. With enough plants, this could be possible.
4. DIY CO2 on a tank that size should be excellent..

hope this helps

Agreed, I'd say do one type of shrimp. Are you experienced in keeping shrimp? If not start out with cherries, they are pretty simple to keep. I'd suggest getting maybe 6 or 7. You'll have at least 20 in a short time.

I'd say start emmersed. Grow it out for maybe 3 weeks, enough time for the plants to root, and possibly a little bit of growth, then fill it. I can almost guarantee that in a week or two you'll have a full carpet. Is that Aquasoil you're using? You won't have to dose it emmersed, and with a nutrient rich substrate you don't have to start dosing off the bat either.

I tried running a filterless tank but found wayyy too much buildup on the surface. If you're going to run Co2, you're also going to need some way to distribute it throughout the tank.

And DIY is more than efficient for a 2.5g. If you're not going to have any livestock in there off the bat, I'd say run as much as you can on it. Personally I'd do 2L to 4L.
