5.5 gallon future plans!

I've wanted to try my hand at a planned out stock lately. But, I just didn't really have a tank. I've got 3 10 gallons but no filters for them, and while I can buy a filter I'm not sure that I want to.

Then I realized that I have an empty 5.5 gallon.

A quick search on planted nano tanks lead me to this: Celestial pearl danios average around 1/2 an inch! I've always thought of them as around the 2 inch range, like many smaller fish. I like their color but I don't have anywhere that sells them. But, if they get just 1/2 an inch I'd love to try them in the 5.5.

So, now I need plant ideas.

And substrate ideas.

And lighting ideas (is the 5.5's hood enough? If so, what kind of bulbs do I need (the ones in it are burned out).

I'm planning on doing 5 Celestial Pearls and maybe some shrimp.

So, shrimp ideas?

And, what special care do the plants need?

I'm thinking maybe focusing the plants to one corner and thinning them out towards the other side with maybe a few rocks scattered around to help set it up. Suggestions?
