How Much Lighting for a low tech Nano Tank (5G)

I'm gonna be downgrading from my low tech 55G to a 5G. I'd like to set up the 5G fairly low tech too. I know the watts per gallon rule breaks down on small tanks, so I was just wondering what is considered low lighting on such a small tank? I'd like to have roughly the equivalent of what I have now on the 55G, maybe a tiny bit more. On the 55G I currently have two 4 foot fluorescent bulbs with a very nice reflector. The bulbs are rated at 32 watts and 2750 lumen. Things are growing great with not too much work. A tiny bit more light might help though since with the current light I have trouble growing any of the fancy lawn plants (hemianthus callitrichoides & Utricularia graminifolia are two I tried but failed) which I wouldn't mind growing in the 5G, but only if it still stays a low tech low maintenance tank.

I'm probably gonna go with either those screw in compact fluorescent bulbs or hopefully those straight compact fluorescent ones if I can find a good lamp. Based on the lumen figure, I'm thinking I would be aiming for roughly two 9W straight compact flourescent bulbs ... is that correct? Would two 13W straight compact bulbs be too bright?

Thanks,
Harry

You need CO2 and ferts to successfully grow UG and HC. So it's not going to be exactly low tech that way.

Two 13W PC bulbs (if that's what you are talking about) with good reflectors would be a lot of light for a 5 gal tank and pretty much require some nutrient dosing.

A single 18W PC bulb might work out well... or the two 9W that you mentioned.

I'm dosing ferts right now (I'm following Tom Barr's Non CO2 Low Tech method which uses ferts once a week), but I guess maybe I'm missing the CO2 for it to survive in my 55G ... I just figured it was too low lights ... maybe it's a combination of both.
