Pletchetero's First Nano

Okay, so our neighborhood is having yard/garage sales all over and I happen to run across a small Marineland Hex 5 tank for $10. I took it home, checked it for leaks, set it up and checked to make sure everything works. Soooo, what to do now? What kind of plants would you suggest? And fish?
I want to cycle it faster by possibly cutting a piece of filter sponge from my 55g and putting it in there. Will that disrupt the bacteria colony in the 55g?
Can't wait to hear everyones suggestions and to get this tank started!

I've always done the filter sponge thing, some people say it doesn't work...but I like it. giggle.

Is that a pet of yours on the avatar?

Yeah that's my tarantula (P. Murinus). I got her about 2 years ago in Oklahoma.
So doing the filter sponge idea never hurt your bacteria colony and caused an ammonia spike?
