Substrate Depth in a Nano

I know the optimal depth in normal sized tanks is 2-3" but how about nanos does it change at all? 3" seems a bit much in mine currently.

I have a finnex 8g (16 x 10 x 12)

All my sub 10 gallon tanks have substrates 1.5" deep at the front and 2.5" deep at the back. I find this gives the best substrate-water column proportions.
