Beginner with plan requesting advice
Let me first introduce myself and give a brief background. I started the hobby about 5 years ago with a small saltwater tank. I started it all wrong, but after tons of research and patience, my first tank was fairly successful. In that time, I was also introduced to the beautiful planted tanks I saw at a specialty store in Hawaii (where I lived at the time). I purchased a small tank of a couple gallons and attempted this, with poor results in the end (Unfortunately, I didn't translate my lessons learned from saltwater). Anyway, fast-forward several years. After I rebuilt my little tank after moving, I eventually wanted to go bigger, and a couple years ago bought a rather large aquarium an started a big reef tank. Well, with work and school, my time has forced me to shut it down a few months back, until I'm done with school. At the time I kept the small aquarium, I had two little dwarf puffers. I attribute my lack of success to my mistake of not doing my research, and adequately preparing. I've had some practice with saltwater, and have learned many lessons along the way. So there's a quick background.
While I don't have time for a big reef tank, I can't seem to get away from the hobby, and my wife really wants to get dwarf puffers again. So here's the plan. I have a 10 gallon with HOB and heater, that I had ready for a QT for my reef tank. While I'm selling my big tank, I figured I'd keep this 10 gallon for a planted tank with dwarf puffers, and eventually will transfer it to my wife's classroom once well established (likely next school year). I purchased a bag of Eco-Complete, and that's where I'm at. I have two light fixtures available to use, one's a 18" 36W CF fixture (kinda cheap, but works) and the other is a 18" 36W VHO T5 fixture. I figured the CF fixture might be a good choice because it's cheap and will end up in my wife's classroom, but I wonder what the consensus is. So, from my understanding, not only do I think it will look nice, but I understand that the puffers like heavily planted tanks, with some turf to lay eggs. So, considering the setup, what would everyone recommend for these fish and this beginner? Any other suggestion? By the way, I am very patient. If there's one thing I've learned, it's that nothing good happens fast.
Thanks ahead for your help!
