Starting a 2.5 (new to planted tanks)

I'm looking to build a 2.5 gal planted tank for my office. I've done freshwater and was very heavy into saltwater reef tanks for many years. At one point I had two display reef tanks, 90gal and 70gal, a 150gal propagation system, several hospital tanks and a 2.5gal for my mantis shrimp. Here is my equipment plan for the planted 2.5.
Aqueon tank
Small canister filter (which one ??)
Led lighting

I am clueless about substrate or what else I will need. Any help, links or suggestions would be great

I'm also doing a DIY background from styrofoam and mortar. One of my guys made one for the 35gal tank we have in the outer office, complete with a sand fall. It came out great so I'm going to try it on a smaller scale.

I know there are different brands of substrate out there, and some people that do their own substrate mixtures, but for me I love the popular ADA Amazonia soil. There is a small grain variety that would be better for a nano tank. It is nutrient rich and does not cloud the water.

I went with the exo terra FX200 turtle tank canister. I swapped out one of the sponges for ceramic filter media and added a piece of the sponge to the intake basket to slow the flow a little. Even with that is have good circulation without being a whirlpool.
