12 gallon JBJ Nano setup?

I am going to start up a 12 gallon JBJ setup. It is currently a little reef of which I am tired of....so I will tear down today and setup the nano. I plan to use amazonian II regular and powder as substrate, and some rocks, will plan to use NO co2, rather dose with excel....etc. Will change water once a week... and will very likely use RO water for the changes..... I want to keep a small school of cardinals, and some shrimp...

I would like to set this up iwagumi style....

Depth of substrate?
what to put in the back chambers (they are empty right now for the reef), thought I would add the sponges maybe the ceramics and bio balls etc....carbon or something....maybe Purigen as an example....

Thanks,
Chris

Well, I set it up, a 12 gallon nano cube. I am using amazonian, about 2 inches, topped off with amazonian powder. I have two pagoda rocks.

Plants:

1. Across the front: Dwarf Baby Tears (Hemianthus callitrichoides)
2. Along the sides of the rock to the back behind the rocks: Clover, Four Leaf (Marsilea quadrifolia)
3. Some hair grass along the back right, and some micro swords
4. In the left corner: Wendtii, Red (Cryptocoryne wendtii)

Filtration:

Sponges in chamber 1
2 bags of ceramic rings, and bioballs in the middle chamber
The heater is in the last chamber with the return pump

Lighting:

2 24 watt 10000K bulbs (this was a reef tank). I know I need to change these....
