What filter is best for2.5 gallon plant/betta tank w/ laterite as the only substrate?

I have the 2.5 Gallon Aqueon miniBow and the filter that comes with it is awful. I used API first layer laterite and the tank is still red dusty after 3 days of running that stupid filter. The cartridges that go with it have barely any carbon at all in them, just a few pebbles. I am looking for a small filter that I will be able to put my own bagged stuff in. What do you guys recommend? I don't want a huge one that will take up the whole tank, but I still want to be able to fit whatever filter media I want in there.

Honestly I'd go with a sponge filter they work great and as being only a 2.5 gal tank you can go with a pretty small one you can hide behind something I have one in my Betta tank

Laterite is a substrate supplement, something to add to a substrate.
If you look on the back of the package, it says use one Oz for every gallon of water.

The shortest distance between any two points is a straight line...in the opposite direction...
